If you follow my blog, you may have noticed a trend in the engagement / love shoots I post. More and more, couples are approaching me to do more than take their engagement photographs – they’re asking me to “style” the shoot for them. The funny thing is, I realized that I have a knack for this and more than that, I love doing it. You may be wondering, “why would I want someone to style my shoot” or “what does that even mean?” These are good questions. I’m a photographer but I also view myself as the creative director of your shoot. There’s nothing more exciting that receiving a call from a couple who really wants to up the ante on their photo shoot and ask for my help. Let me give you some examples.
Have you ever read the novel Possession by A.S. Byatt? It’s a delicious tale of intrigue, scandal and Victorian poetry. Maybe you’ve seen the movie with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam? If you haven’t, then this love shoot with Randi and Shakir will send you running to pick up a copy. I think it’s so cool when a couple has a special connection with a story, a song, a movie or even an era, and brings those ideas to their shoot. These two were great storytellers and made some pretty pictures in the process. The images evoke a sense of history, romance and of course, the tenderness between Randi and Shakir.
Oh my!! I looked at the frost on my window this morning and thought this summer love shoot with Gillian and Cory would be the perfect antidote. I’m loving the rich color and Gillian’s gorgeous smile in this shoot. Enjoy!!

I’m so excited about today’s post. I have had some amazing clients this summer who handed over the reigns and let me really get my creative juices flowing when planning their shoots. For Rob & Dayna, it all started with the idea of a 1960’s summer resort, like the one in Dirty Dancing. From there we thought, “why not take it one step further” and actually have Dayna & Rob put their own spin on some of the infamous scenes? See if you can pick some of them out. The idea was to hint at the past but also create beautiful pictures that represent Dayna & Rob today. The light was soft & buttery, these two had some moooves and I just love the nostalgic feel we captured. Dayna & Rob, I had so much fun with you guys and I hope you will enjoy these photos for years to come.

As a native Calgarian, I’ve been to the Calgary Stampede many a time. Year after year, a lot of things remain the same, right? The rodeo, the grandstand show and fireworks every night, a colorful display of city folk decked out in Cowboy hats, corn dogs and of course, mini-donuts. Don’t get me wrong, this is all what makes the Stampede great. This year was a little different though. First of all we had some Royal visitors and secondly, Kristin & Jon put away their boots & hats and embraced the 1950’s for a love shoot on the midway. I had such a fun evening documenting them while they took in the Stampede sights. I love it when couples put a personal stamp on their session. It leads to so much more than pretty pictures.
Had an amazing summer shoot tonight, straight out of 1963. More to come but until then, let’s just say that “nobody puts Baby in the corner”. Stay tuned…

I was completely intrigued when Whitney and I discussed this engagement session in Black Diamond. Whitney told me there would be horses, quads, a river, wildflowers…I was sold. I’m really looking forward to their wedding at the Cochrane Ranchehouse in August. Check out their sneak peek here.
